Chapter 25

Tim magically appeared by Lucie’s side, casually falling in step with her down the mountainside stairs, less than a minute after the end of class. She wasn’t sure whether it was a coincidence or some disturbing knowledge of her personal class schedule, but the second option seemed a lot more likely than the first.

“Ready to play?” Tim asked grinning with anticipated excitement. A bounce in his step.

Lucie hugged her books close to her chest. “Nope. Going to sit this one out.”

His feet stumbled on the stairs, too busy gazing at her to pay attention to the steps. “What? But you have to play. We’re counting on you.”

“You’ll survive without me.”

“I would, but surviving with you by my side is so much better.”

She nearly shivered out of her skin, involuntarily shifting further to the edge of the staircase. He had the audacity to flirt with her after ruining her precious plants and leaving her a dead bird. There had to be something mentally wrong with the guy.

“Hey T man, are you going to be able to play this afternoon with that shoddy hand of yours?” Ryan joked from behind, one arm casually draped around Kelly’s shoulders. Lucie turned, sighting the smirk Kelly shot her way, an eyebrow raised in suspicion between her and Tim.

Tim clenched his hands as if testing them. “Absolutely. I’d play even if I’d severed my finger right off.”

“You would.” A chortled laugh juddered Ryan’s chest. “I’d suggest changing the teams up a bit today, but I think it would be unfair for Lucie and I to be on the same team as one another. Need to give you some chance at winning.”

“Lucie’s on my team” Tim replied possessively, moving close enough to brush his arm against hers. She tensed at the contact.

Ryan’s hand raised in a placating gesture. “Easy tiger. Just a suggestion.”

“I’m not playing” Lucie murmured, receiving an instant frown from Ryan.

Tim simply laughed. “She’s kidding. Lucie owes me a favour. I’ll need someone to nurse me better if I get hurt from one of your spikes.” Lucie shared a glance with Tim, his eyes glinting with malice, trapping her like a cat to a mouse. She’d asked him to do her a favour weeks ago by keeping her secret about the nurse uniform investigation in the hospital and he’d agreed. It seemed he was calling in her favour now.

Lucie loosened her shoulders, cracking her neck, and grinned. “Sure, I’ll play. If only to kick Ryan’s arse again.”

Condescending laughter burst from Ryan’s mouth, much to Kelly’s disgust. One of her painted nails stroked down his torso as she curled against him, marking her territory. “I think I might play today if that’s okay with you babe?” Kelly crooned at her man, shooting Lucie a dirty look.

He murmured an agreement while nibbling her ear. Disturbed, Lucie choked out an exaggerated cough, to which she only received a laugh from Tim. Kelly had never offered to join in, but perhaps her relationship with Ryan had developed enough that the risk of embarrassing herself was lower.
